Rather than writing papers for an English class, mixing chemicals for a chemistry lab, or practicing piano for a musical performance, students are tested in a different fashion. Typical lab activities during a semester include shooting an M-16 rifle in Basic Rifle Marksmanship, jumping into a swimming pool with all of the equipment on during Combat Water Survival Training, and locating specific coordinate points while traversing the day and night land navigation course; additionally, students learn more about the Army through platoon movement, patrolling, squad tactic exercises and equipment inspection labs. Each of these lab sessions, though, stress the importance of communication and team unity.
